Bibby Progress Floating Hotel Case Study

When Chevron needed to house 750 workers on a remote barge in Nigeria for a five-year project, they faced a major challenge: how to create a self-contained wastewater treatment system with no access to local sewer services. Chevron turned to SludgeHammer® for a solution.

Case Study Overview

Bibby Maritime Limited, known for its “Coastels” – floating hotels on barges – was tasked with housing 750 Chevron workers for a five-year project in remote Escravos, Nigeria. The challenge: creating a self-contained wastewater treatment system for the barge with no access to local sewer services.

The Challenge

The remote location lacked a local sewer system, and pump and haul options were too expensive. Chevron needed a marine-appropriate septic system for the Coastel that could support 750 workers for an extended period, all while staying within budget and meeting tight schedules.

The Solution

SludgeHammer® provided its Aerobic Bacterial Generator (ABG) technology to build a self-contained wastewater treatment system. The system could process 50,000 gallons of water per day and discharge treated water into the ocean. The SludgeHammer® team completed the retrofit in Rotterdam in under a month, preparing the Coastel for the project.

The Result

After a two-month tow to Nigeria, the system was successfully installed, providing the workers with reliable wastewater treatment. The Coastel operated smoothly for the duration of the project, and the workers enjoyed the comfort of flushing toilets and running water. The project was completed on time and on budget, showcasing SludgeHammer’s ability to deliver effective solutions in challenging conditions.
