Wastewater Challenges in Wineries

Due to high organic loads, wineries face unique challenges when it comes to wastewater management. The most common issues that can occur include inadequate system sizing leading to a more frequent need for cleaning or system failure, wastewater strength being too high for municipal treatment, clogged systems, and odors.

Without proper wastewater treatment, the essential role of water can turn into a significant operational challenge that directly affects a winery’s profitability and reputation. Effective water management ensures consistent product quality while supporting sustainable practices.

How SludgeHammer® Can Help in Wineries

SludgeHammer’s systems make winery wastewater management simple and efficient. Using advanced BioActivator™ technology, we harness microorganisms to break down organic matter, cutting down on Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD).

These systems are compact, flexible, and adjust easily to seasonal changes, making them a great fit for any winery. All of our certified systems meet regulations to ensure the treated water meets environmental standards, so it’s safe to reuse for irrigation or discharge.

French Road Cellars

Commercial Case Study

French Road Cellars, a winery on the Leelanau Peninsula, produces wines and ciders for Chateau Fontaine and other labels. Their old wastewater system was failing, with clogged tanks that were overflowing and no space for a leach field.

SludgeHammer® installed equipment to improve water quality and worked with the DEQ to create a better system. We upgraded the tanks, redirected wastewater to a hillside using underground pipes, and installed a drip field. The new system has been working flawlessly since.
